I had the pleasure of attending the Butterfly Bash, Fair Chance DC’s annual fundraising event. Fair Chance partners with community-based nonprofits in order to strengthen them, by providing transformative services at no cost. These organizations help the lives of children and youth living in poverty to give them a fair chance at success. Since 2002, Fair Chance has worked with over 100 organizations, reaching 80,000 kids.
The Gala was held at The National Cathedral, which did not disappoint. The lighting on the vaulted ceilings was the highlight of the night, in my opinion. The colors would change through the night but butterflies were always the prime focus. Several tables with gold accent china and tasteful hors d-oeuvres were set up around the floor. A gorgeous main bar covered with mirror fragments was located in the center floor. There was plenty of tables and seating located on the perimeters. The perfect set up for an enjoyable night.
Eun Yang, NBC news anchor was the emcee for the night. They began the night with the DC Youth Orchestra. Following they honored Carlos M. Gutierrez, former U. S. Secretary of Commerce. He was recognized for his advocacy work as co-founder of TheDream.US. This program is the largest in the nation for DREAMers, (Undocumented immigrant youth who came to this country at a young age) to give them the chance to realize their college dreams.
The fundraising then began with a set goal of $100,000. Those in attendance through their mobile devices were able to donate, while a live feed was up on several large screens. I could have never imagined that within ten minutes they would surpass their goal.
This goal being met set the tone of the rest of the night. The live band began to play and some began to dance while others chatted. Everyone was in high spirits and enjoying the bash.
I am so honored that I had the chance to attend an event with so many people who are making a difference. The Butterfly Bash not only was able to reach their goal, but spread the word about all Fair Chance DC does for our youth.
