Alem Beshir & her beautiful family. The inspiration for YOGASO.

I met Alem Beshir at the opening party of one of DC’s hottest restaurants last year. Her electrifying, positive energy was instantly contagious. We bonded over being mothers, our multi-ethnic backgrounds and our passion for fashion. Alem reached out to me a couple months ago to let me know that her brand new boutique YOGASO had recently opened at the new North Bethesda town center ,Pike & Rose. I recently visited the boutique with my children, Ella and Logan during one of the final snowy days we’ve had this spring.

YOGASO was founded by Alem Beshir. Her vision for YOGASO was inspired by her multicultural background and her three children. Alem designed her boutique from top to bottom without consulting an architect or interior designer. She considered every detail of the boutique herself. The 1700 square foot boutique is bright and beautiful. From the moment you walk in, the wide open space feels welcoming. The boutique is a real showcase for the beautifully curated clothing designed for children ranging from infants to 12 year olds. Architecturally, the boutique is very impressive and showcases the clothes, accessories, books and toys in a way that allows the merchandise to awake your visual senses.

The clothing is imported mostly from Europe, but  the collection also consists of American, Japanese and South American designers. Prices are very affordable at a price point of  $35 to $50 for clothing items, much less expensive than jetting over to another country and buying the clothing there–which is something Alem did regularly while visiting her family abroad and attending expos and trade shows. Alem said she’s attracted to European kids’ clothing because it tends to be higher quality than mass-produced items sold in larger American department stores and I completely agree. Her collection is eco-friendly and sustainable, the style is very classic, very personal to Alem’s distinctive tastes. Definitely a world class boutique.

One of the lines of clothing sold at the boutique is Aleme, inspired by her children, the word “Aleme” means “My world” in Amharic, a primary language of Ethiopia. Her children are her world! “Aleme” is not only a clothing brand; it’s also the reflection of love, culture, and Style. The YOGASO name is derived from the first two letter of each of her 3 children’s names: Yohannes, Gabriella, and Sofia.

Ella, Logan and I really love this boutique because it doesn’t feel like a standard retail store,  it feels like an exhibition, an innovative take on a boutique. The entire space is open, very minimalistic and has that “wow” factor. When we visited YOGASO to see Alem and have a look at the boutique we had no idea what to expect and were absolutely blown away with the boutique. I think you will be too.

YOGASO offers kid’s birthday parties, kid’s yoga classes and fashion events.

YOGASO is located at: 11803 Grand Park Ave, North Bethesda MD at Pike and Rose . For more information, visit www.yogaso.com

Blowdry Taxi Founder, Sona Sut

Blowdry Taxi Founder, Sona Sut

We live in a very hectic, fast paced society. Add being a mom to the mix and the time available to get your hair done is even shorter. I’d like to introduce you to Blowdry Taxi, a faster, more convenient way to get your hair done. No more having to wait for an appointment at your local salon or blow-dry bar. With a few clicks of a mouse or using an app on your smart phone, you can have a trained and licensed hair stylist come to you for the same price you’d pay for a salon appointment.

Blowdry Taxi was founded by a beautiful, intelligent, talented and busy mother named Sona Sut. Sona has a staff of 12 stylists on a rotating schedule that can bring the “salon” to you  anytime from 7 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. A standard blow out is only $50 and more elaborate styles such as curls and braids are a reasonable $75 and updos are only $85.

For the holidays, I hosted a “Spa Party” for my daughter, a few of her friends and their mothers. Per Blowdry Taxi’s instructions, I asked all the guests to arrive with their hair freshly washed and either completely wet or damp (primed to get styled). Sona and her team of four amazing hair stylists showed up promptly at our scheduled time, happy and excited to pamper and style everyone. Within five minutes of arrival, the stylists had all their tools and products set up and were ready for their first clients. They delivered professional and beautiful hair within 20 minutes per child and mom. The talent of all the stylists was excellent. And the energy in the room was positively electrifying.

All of the little girls were very happy to get their hair done. The moms relaxed, mingled and marveled at how their daughters hair looked. The stylists were very patient listening to each girls request for a hair style. And each of the stylists were very gentle, taking special care not to tug, pull or snag anyone’s hair. Even my daughter Ella, the most sensitive to get her hair done, loved getting her hair done by the stylists. The moms switched places with their daughters and were treated with the same professional care. One mother whispered to me “I wish I could get this done on New Year’s Eve” and Sona charmingly handed her a card and said “You CAN! Call me!”

Blowdry Taxi is the best mobile hair service in DC/MD/Northern Virginia to provide professional blowouts and elegant hair styles in the comfort of your own home, hotel or office. They even offer professional make-up application. Blowdry Taxi is the perfect alternative to going to a salon without compromising incredible style and is available at your convenience. They are available for all of your special occasion needs: black tie galas, weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, anniversary parties or simply just to feel and look your best–they’ve got you covered.

Blowdry Taxi also makes booking an appointment as simple as logging onto their website or by using their new App!

“Meet Us At the Barre, We Will Be Waiting For You”. Xtend Barre is Pilates and Dance…Amplified!

Featured in FITNESS, SHAPE and SELF magazines, Xtend Barre is a high-energy total body workout that combines serious sculpting exercises done at the ballet barre with lively music and cardio where clients can have fun while achieving very serious results in under an hour. Created by former dancer/choreographer and Pilates expert Andrea Rogers, Xtend Barre workout doesn’t stop at pirouettes. Its’a dynamic, no-holds barre (get it?), low-impact/high performance workout packed with isometric exercises that make your guns, buns, abs – and everything else – scream with delight. Exercises at a professional ballet barre with precise concentrated movements and light weight training target small muscle groups while wide reaching motion is designed to lengthen your physique. An array of props like resistance balls, weights, stretch bands and more also keep you on your toes. The result? A strong, sculpted, coveted “dancer-like body” without the unwanted bulk, and increased stamina and flexibility.

I had the most amazing opportunity to attend the fun (yet challenging) sneak preview of Xtend Barre Studio earlier this week where I  met the beautifully sculpted mother of two, my new fitness icon Andrea Rogers and studio owner Natalie Strahorn, who is also beautifully sculpted and inspiring. The Barre workout is phenomenal! I loved everything about it: the stretching, the sculpting, the breathing, the weights, the band, the barre… I especially enjoyed how I felt hours following the workout. I literally glowed and could feel my body improving.  It was so much fun.

Andrea Rogers is full of exhilarating high energy motivating everyone to do their best. The studio itself is brand new, bright, fresh, clean and minimalistic zen. Studio owner Natalie Strahorn discovered Barre while working in Fashion in New York City and decided to bring it to Old Town. I’m so happy she did! The class left me so invigorated I felt like picking up Andrea Rogers after the class. I was pumped up and feeling great! Xtend Barre is the perfect place to get in shape for the summer!

What makes them even more unique is that they offer more than just barre class! Beginning next month, they will be introducing Barrecamp, a hybrid of barre class with added cardio sequences and HIIT (high intensity interval training), which helps to get your heart rate up for extra calorie burning. For all the fabulous mamas out there, they also will be offering Babies on Board, where moms can wear their babies in their carrier while working out at the barre. Share the excitement!

Xtend Barre Old Town Grand Opening is Saturday, June 14th. Classes are at: 8:30 AM, 10 AM and 11:30 AM. Open House from 12:30 PM to 2 PM.Enjoy healthy bites and drinks courtesy of Whole Foods, Flat Iron Steak & Saloon, Barre Protein Bars, Yogurtini and South Block Juice Company.
