Because of the long hours I spend in front of my computer as a writer and blogger, I always take extra care of my eyes. My eye care routine includes an annual eye exam at our local MyEyeDr. in Clarendon. Back to school is a great time to complete all of your family’s wellness visits. This year, I became just as pro-active with my family’s eye care as I am with the rest of our health and wellness checkups. My family and I had such a great experience. MyEyeDr. offers warm, friendly and service. At MyEyeDr., their passion and commitment to patient-focused vision service has allowed extends premier eye care services to patients of all ages at our optometry offices in the mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest and Southeast United States. MyEyeDr. also accepts over two dozen health insurance plans.
Most of my friends and family don’t even know I wear corrective lenses. But, I was prescribed glasses when I was in the third grade for an astigmatism and near-sighted vision. Although, it seems a little embarrassing to admit it now, I secretly had hoped my eyes were “bad” back then so that I could get a prescription to wear glasses. I found them incredibly sexy! Eventually my penchant for sexy framed glasses waned and I moved on to invisible, undetectable and disposable contact lenses. I never really had “sexy glasses” when I was seven or eight years old anyway. People told me I looked more like the [famous talk show host] Sally Jessy Rafael than I did Diana Prince, better known as Wonder Woman–and that was the look I was really trying to achieve.
Eye exams at MyEyeDr. are very technologically savvy, making the eye exam interesting and believe it or not, fun for many kids. My children were amazed at the “sci-fi looking equipment” at the optometrist’s office. Advanced digital technology is used to provide high-resolution and 3D images which allows the doctor to see the current state of your eye and also allows them to detect health issues including glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes. The eye exams today are not the eye exams we had when we were the same age as our children.
This was the first professional eye exam for Ella and Logan. They were slightly nervous about what to expect, but once we met the eye technician and our optometrist, it was smooth sailing and they actually enjoyed it and had fun. Each of our eye exams took around 20 minutes to complete. Both Ella and Logan enjoyed seeing their eye on the 3D screen and were very excited to learn that they had very healthy eyes and 20/20 vision. They also really enjoyed learning tips on how to keep their eyes healthy.
I learned that my dry eye condition still existed, primarily as a side effect of my seasonal allergy medication. My optometrist gave me samples of a really great over the counter eye drop product to help moisturize and replenish my seasonal dry eyes. She also offered me some great tips on keeping our family’s eyes healthy.
I definitely recommend MyEyeDr. for all of your family’s eye care needs! MyEyeDr. has a ton of classically stylish as well as trendy frames to choose from. MyEyeDr. has dozens upon dozens of choices, both online and in-store. At MyEyeDr., you won’t have to choose between exceptional eye care services and the eyewear brands you love.
Tips on Keeping Your Family’s Eyes Healthy
1.Annual Eye Exams for the Family
Make sure you visit MyEyeDr. to get your correct prescription and update it as needed! Whether you have to wear prescription glasses or not, it’s still really important to wear sunglasses when you go outside. Make sure to purchase glasses that have a good UVA and UVB protection!
2.Wear Sunglasses
Over time, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can deteriorate vision, leading to cataracts; age-related macular degeneration, or loss of sight in the center of the field of vision; and noncancerous and cancerous growths on the eyes’ surface, eyelids, and surrounding skin. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s a good idea to get sunglasses with lenses that are polarized, which means that they’ve been treated to reduce glare. Look for an “ANSI” sticker on the sunglasses, which indicates that they meet these guidelines as proven by the American National Standards Institute. You wouldn’t send your kids out in the sun without sunscreen. Protect their developing peepers with high quality sunglasses, available at MyEyeDr.
3.Keep Screens at a Distance
The contrast and the glare of an electronic screen can eventually lead to eyestrain and, in some cases, computer vision syndrome, which happens after prolonged use. Symptoms can include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, dry or red eyes, fatigue, double vision, and difficulty refocusing. Experts recommend that you keep your eyes at least an arm’s length from a computer screen and 16 inches from a handheld device.
4.Update your Cosmetics Regularly
Bacteria can thrive in mascara, so toss the tube after three months. Also, sharpen liner pencils regularly. Don’t put eye liner inside the lash line as it can block the oil glands, which protect your eyes’ surface. Instead, just line the base of your lashes.
MyEyeDr. was founded in 2001 by a group of optometrists, along with co-founder Sue Healey Downes, who made it their mission to create an organization that assisted optometry practices in delivering the highest quality vision care and customer service. It is headquartered in Vienna, Virginia.
