Earth Fare, opened it’s doors in Fairfax last Wednesday, January 10th and I had the exciting opportunity to be one of the guests of the new store. The Asheville, North Carolina-based chain hopes to open between five and seven additional stores in the D.C. area during the next two years, according to CEO Frank Scorpiniti. The first store in area is located at 11054 Lee Highway in Fairfax. The 20,000-square-foot store is a bit smaller than the typical Earth Fare, which averages 24,000 square feet. The company expects to open 10 stores in 2018 and 13 stores in 2019, according to Scorpiniti. Five to seven of those will likely be in the D.C. area.
Earth Fare was founded in 1975 as Dinner for the Earth. The store promotes eating clean and carries mostly organic, sustainable products and has a “boot” list of forbidden ingredients. The list includes synthetic growth hormones, high fructose corn syrup, bleached and bromated flour, as well as artificial fats, sweeteners, preservatives, colors and flavors. The Fairfax location features organic and local produce, organic, non-GMO and sustainable meat and fish and a large prepared foods section including hot and salad bar, pizza station and juice and smoothie bar.
The Fairfax store is Earth Fare’s 45th location and opens just as the company has launched a new magazine designed around healthy eating, called The Clean Plate. (Stay tuned to my Instagram stories as I will be sharing the monthly magazine with you.) The store’s slogan is “Live Longer with Earth Fare.” It claims to have the broadest assortment of fresh, organic and local produce in the industry. It has more than 175 natural and organic bulk foods. Its meat comes from “humanely raised” livestock never given antibiotics or added hormones. It offers “sustainable and traceable” seafood, and also has an in-store cafe.
